Awarded with a ovation of several minutes at the Cannes festival, where he competed; based on facts, the "Traitor" in a surprising, fresh way addresses the subject of the mafia. And this is due to the charismatic hero who is both a hunter and a hunter; the shocking image of corruption and violence digesting Sicily, an insightful portrait of a mafia octopus whose tentacles reached far beyond the island. Made with epic panache, Marc Bellocchio's film from the first scene grabs his throat, drawing him into the dark world of crimes, escapes, lies and judicial skirmishes.
At the center of the story is Tommaso Buscetta, the boss who broke the omerum, i.e. the mafia collusion of silence. Thanks to his testimony, the most famous trial against Cosa Nostra took place: the maxi process led to the conviction of 362 leaders of a criminal organization. It was the greatest victory of the state over the mafia in history. A fascinating on-screen investigation focuses on the transformation of Buscetta, for which La Cosa Nostra, or "our business," began to mean something completely different than the heads of clans would like. The title "Traitor" is not a hero, though. Bellocchio sees him as almost a Shakespearean hero, caught up in a tragic conflict. The film wonderfully covers his ambiguity: he is a murderer, unfaithful husband, brutal, cynical and ruthless man. He testifies against his own in defense of the honor of the mafia - the one who raised him and which he believes the new leaders have betrayed. It is loyalty to the "family" that makes him turn bosses and reveal all the secrets of Cosa Nostra in court. Placed during the trial in cages, former friends turn into wild animals. They spit, throw themselves on bars, demand the blood of the "Traitor". The only ally of the hidden, honored man is the legendary judge Falcone.
The ambiguous, suspenseful, spectacular "Traitor" is a film about a mafia that has never been seen before. The story is told from the perspective of a boss who unexpectedly stands on the side of justice, not only phenomenally reconstructs the darkest time in the history of fighting the mafia; but also raises questions about the importance of loyalty, honor and betrayal - questions that have never ceased to be valid.
